Will Travel for Yarn…

Yes, I will travel for yarn….or wait….I mean I’ll ride along in the car…for yarn…. (thank you Crystal for driving all over Ohio for yarn!)

My good friend Crystal and I went on our second day for a yarn tour…we went to four stores this time…more “local” to us…

We went to The Designing Women yarn shop, Crochet Innovations, Long Tail Knits, and Harps & Thistles Yarn Emporium.

Of course we found something at each and every shop!  Each store had a little bit of standard, everyday yarns and unique hand-dyed yarns…which was really great to see.  We have now come to the decision that a yarn shop needs to have a bit of everything…local yarns, hand dyed yarns, everyday yarns, classes, demonstrations, etc.  I’m taking notes…because someday, my goal is to own my own yarn shop!

Here are the photos I took of these stores…I somehow forgot to take many photos because my eyes glass over when I see yarn!  We still have 9 more stores to go to yet before we finish the tour….we are hoping to get them all in one day – do you think we can do it??  Cross your fingers!!

What am I knitting now?

I’m working on hats!  I’ve had several requests for custom made hats….. so I’m making several of each in different yarns.   Pom Pom hats and slouchy hats seem to be the rage right now.

Here is a completed slouchy hat in soft pink – I love this hat and may make one for myself!!

Buying from me…

I’ve had several ask how to get a hand knit item from me…well… its easy!

You can visit my Etsy shop by clicking SHOP above and order online, you can go to Marigold Salon, Spa, & Marketplace and touch & try on my items there, or you can email or private message me to place a custom order.  Payment is cash or credit via PayPal or square if in person.  Its that easy!  So just let me know what I can knit for you!

More yarn please…

Since my girlfriends and I are trying to coordinate going to 19 yarn shops when we all work full-time…it has become difficult…and we really want to hit ALL the stores.  Not just for the competition aspect of getting all the stamps in our books and entered in all the drawings…but because we want to see where all the shops are, what yarns they carry, and if it can become our local hang out to knit….

But we weren’t able to hit one store together…we had to go it alone….  I assumed going alone might be better for my wallet…but…when your husband offers to take you to a yarn shop….he finds patterns for stuff he’d like to wear….which means… YAY!!! MORE PROJECTS!!…so I didn’t save money “going alone”… but I definitely had fun looking at yarn with the hubs… he has a different perspective that I don’t and he really got to see what a yarn shop looks like – and one similar to the aesthetic and layout that I would love in a yarn shop.

We went to Cast On Yarn Studio……in Vermilion Ohio…

I loved almost everything about this shop…from the white shelving, the displays of finished objects (FOs), and a pattern and sample knitted up using the yarn…all made for great brain storming on what to make next.  The only big thing I would love would be a larger space to come in and sit to knit because the atmosphere is wonderful and you’re fully encased in yarn and yarny things….lol! The owner is very sweet and helpful too!  She does have a table in the center of the room to sit around, but I would think that would disrupt both the person knitting and the shopper trying to walk around them…but because of the cuteness of this shop…I’m willing to overlook that small detail… My husband reminded me that not every shop owner has a place for people to come in and just sit & knit… that maybe she just loves selling yarn, and not the group activity part of it…and I hadn’t thought of that…he’s probably right….

Here are the shots I got from the shop….

My FO…

I finished the Roaring Tides Shawl Test Knit…

Many have asked me what that means… well, myself and several others have been asked to “test knit” a pattern the designer has created.  We read his or her instructions and see if we can come up with the same design they intended and to keep in contact with them if there are any errors or confusing parts… the goal is for us to help her find glitches or problem areas in the pattern before she releases it to the public for sale.

Here is my completed finished object (FO)… and I LOVE it!!  #roaringtidesshawl

Next post will be more of the yarn shops we explored!

Local Yarn Hop Shop

So September brought the month of the Yarn Discover Tour….this is also the month my credit card died….while I smiled about it!

Yarn Discovery Tour

What is the tour you ask….well…..happy to tell you!

The Yarn Discovery Tour provides fiber enthusiasts the opportunity to visit 19 amazing yarn shops throughout Northeast Ohio.

To find out more information for the tour in 2019…click here for their website.  You purchase a passport with all the yarn shops and get a souvenir bag, to which you collect pins at each store and put on your bag.  Oh my gosh!  That part alone is a blast!!  My two friends and I decided, plotted, and planned how and when we were going to achieve hitting up ALL 19 stores….we spent 4 days in September to drive around Ohio and buy all the stuff!

Over the next few blogs, I’ll share with you what I bought and saw and what my favorite yarn shops are!

The first two days we went to 7 shops.

Black Locust Farms in Lodi – Artist Gallery Yarn in N.Canton – Bare Naked Wools in Canton – Knit Wit Knits in Salem – The Flaming Ice Cube in Boardman – Gwen Erin Natural Fibers in Hubbard – and Yarn Works LTD in Niles.

You can find all the website links via the Yarn Discovery Tour website by clicking here

Black Locust IS my local yarn shop and the owner, Cathy, is amazingly helpful!  She asked about what projects we are working on and showed us what yarns she had available to fit the pattern!  She carried a ton of our favorite yarn brands and has a very inviting atmosphere!  I highly recommend you visit her shop!

black locust farm

Artist Gallery Yarns has a large area for group knitting and a large selection of yarns.

Bare Naked Wools was another favorite!  It was tiny but very appealing!  Anne Hanson is the owner of the shop and the designer.  This shop is all about the “naked” undyed wools.  Here is a link to an interview with Anne by Kristy Glass Knits on YouTube.

The Flaming Ice Cube yarn shop was interesting in that they also have a vegan cafe in the shop!  They carried a lot of the modern new indie dyed yarns and lots of other odds and ends.

Gwen Erin Natural Fibers.. the owner is the most adorable and bubbly person! Gwen Brown is the owner, dyer, spinner, knitter, felter, and weaver.  She hand spins her own line of yarns and has a variety of notions available… she also teaches spinning and knitting at her shop…oh, and google insists that she’s a computer store….the address is correct – go with it!

We had a great time… two more days planned for the yarny adventure! Here is my yarn haul!

I have some specifics planned for most of the yarn, and some the yarn just screamed at me to buy it!…so I did!

A Lazy August

Augusts are always a bit of a sleepy month for me… this August was fun-filled, but still sleepy…

I am cross-fitting as you can see from above… I did have a lot of Personal Records this month!  Working on balance and strength… getting stronger is my goal…. I actually managed to make it there 6 days in a row, and by completing all the Girl WODs that week  I won a drawing for some free Fit-Aid apparel…fun!

Celebrated a wedding between two of my good running friends….  I was great to see all my friends from our Turtle Running Club…. my good friend Sara and I hamming it up!

My sister’s little girl Della Ray is doing well…growing a lot…. I miss her, wished they lived closer to me…  She’s such a cutie and I can see a little personality in her already.

My hubby and I went to Akron for PorchRokr…. its was such a cool outing…

What is PorchRoker?

“Highland Square’s annual PorchRokr Music and Art Festival transforms the verandas of one of Akron’s most historic and eclectic neighborhoods into one-day art studios and concert venues. Thousands of locals and out-of-towners rock out to some 130 diverse musicians and artists, using both area residences and business establishments as their personal stage. The festival rotates each year among four sections of Highland Square to encourage spontaneous interaction among all its neighbors.”

We had such a great time…. the local bands were great and the atmosphere of walking around and listening to different bands was sweet!  The food was great too!  We got this mega-huge burger from A Twist of Leona…so good!  Didn’t get any ice cream though, but we did get all the beer!

I’m knitting up a storm!  My turtle running & knitting friend Crystal, and I joined a Knit Along (KAL) with Kristy Glass Knits and Stitch and Hustle using Asylum Fibers Yarn kit… its becoming a beautiful shawl!  The yarn is soo squishy! We have our regular Sip & Knit days to meet up and knit together… I love this time!

I finished up the legwarmers/yoga socks I was working on…they are now available at Marigold Salon Spa & Marketplace…you should go…check it out…snap them up!

Well… that about sums up my August….how about yours?

Whats on the docket for September?  YARN DISCOVERY TOURS!  Yes!  Crystal, Jennifer, and I are planning to visit 19 yarn shops throughout North East Ohio….its a knitting adventure!!!  and there will be new yarn purchases and patterns and accessories…I’m soo excited!!

She has arrived!!

So I’ve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new niece or nephew….my baby sister (well…she’s a grown adult, but she’ll always be my baby sister) is pregnant with her first child! She lives a good distance from me, so we chat online alot…I’ve never had any children, so I ask her alot of questions. Well…I got the call she was in labor (actually the call came, but I slept through it and didn’t know for 3hrs later, whoops…sorry Ash)… so I called work, made arrangements to be off for a week to be with my sister… and headed to PA to be with my sister.

She had a fast labor… by the time I arrived at the hospital she was 9cm and it was just a matter of time before her little bundle arrived…so we wait…and wait…and wait…hey, where is the baby already?! I want to hold her, like yesterday!!

She has arrived!! Yes, she had a girl!!! Della Rey!! Della is our great grandmother’s name, and my mom’s cousin was also named after her…so cool – I didn’t know that was the name they chose…and I love it!

She is the cutest little, tiniest thing ever! Hardly cried when we were visiting that first few days in the hospital, but after returning home, boy – she’s got lungs! Didn’t realized they didn’t know to sleep at night vs the day….so it made for some really rough sleepless evenings…which I’m sure many mothers can attest to.

Well, I’m in love with her….here are some photos for your viewing pleasure!

What about knitting…

I can say, I did take my knitting with me to PA – and I did knit, but much less than I thought I would – cause it was all about the baby – holding, feeding, changing, hugging, cooing, kissing…. did I say I love that little peanut!

I am working on leg warmers – or dance/yoga socks… they are great for yoga, running in the winter, chilly ballet classes, and overall, great in boots! I’m making some for the shop that carries my knitting (Marigold Salon, Spa & Marketplace in Sharon Center Ohio) .

My sister is also requesting a mini version of them for baby Della – in Mustard yellow, of course….

Well…. back to it! Relaxing on the deck enjoying a lovely Saturday with the hubs, and our “kid”.. Monty… who figured out how to relax in style….

The Marketplace part of their shop is still a growing work in progress and they are featuring local artisans hand crafted items for the shop. As the marketplace expands, they will be in their own section of the salon… right now they have jewelry makers, a local honey producer, essential oils, a glass artist from Akron, and an artist that does hand-lettering, Art, and apparel, just to mention a few…. and of course…me! I’m excited to be apart of their new adventure and thrilled that there is an outlet for you to see my work! Whats new?

I met up with my sister-in-laws this week for Ladies Night… we walked around the square and shopped, laughed, and shopped some more. Then we go have dinner! We hit up all our favorite shops, and when we got to the book store, there was a bartender there! If you purchased an item from the book store, you got you a free drink! A strawberry basil daiquiri ! Soooo good! The bartender was from The Thirsty Goose Traveling Bar out of Medina, OH. Such a cute idea for events! Her Instagram pages is @thethirstygoose or click here for her website. We even made the Gallery photo page! We’ve become famous!!

Just waiting for my sister to have her first baby – she’s due any day now! Its going to be a surprise if its a boy or girl….so I’m waiting to knit until I know what fun pattern I get to make!! (I secretly hope for a girl – cause girl clothes are so much cuter!)

Anyways…. I’m still knitting and I’m planning another Beginners Knit Night soon so be on the lookout for that!

Chieftain of the Day!

Sorry for missing Friday’s post – I was attending the Ohio Scottish Games all weekend!

I annually participate in the Clan Village at the Ohio Scottish Games (OSG). I have a tent/booth set up for the Clan MacRae Society of North America as I am a Director for the society. At my booth, and the many other Scottish Clans that participate, we are there to introduce you to our ancestry, to help you discover your ancestry, and see if we are kin. We welcome you to become members of our society or group and join in social activities pertaining to our Scottish family heritage.

The Clan Village is just one of the many activities going on at OSG. There is highland dancing, fiddle & harp playing, several bands, the pipe & drum competitions, athletic competitions, the kilted mile, Clydesdale and Highland cattle, border collie demonstrations, parade of the tartans, children’s games, poem reading, food, and of course….beer!

This year I was nominated Chieftain of the Day! I was such an honor and a pleasure to be selected! I felt very proud to be the representation of OSG! As such, I got to participate in activities outside my duties in the Clan Village. On Friday night, before we ate dinner, we had the piping in of the haggis and a reading from Robert Burns…. As Chieftain, I was asked to carry the haggis around the room so each person could have a glimpse of it while following a lone piper. It was such fun…. I was unsure exactly where we were walking and what I need to do…. but it was all good! Check out the video below to see me in action! LOL! What is haggis you ask???…. click here to find out!

Also as Chieftain of the day, I officially announced the “Opening of the Games” to the crowd. I also received special recognition for the Clan MacRae Society of N.A. I got to help in the decision for the Best Clan Tent winner, and I also did a lot of Highland Dancing on Friday night….yes, me…..dancing…. I sponsored a runner in the Kilted Mile – who won!!! Great job Lars Cartwright!!

All in all, it was an awesome day and completely rewarding!

What about knitting….are you still knitting??

Why yes! Of course I’m still knitting…I’m still working on my Cerulean Mist Shawl…

I do have some exciting news about Peacocks and Purls – my knitting shop, and what’s new on the horizon for it – but stay tuned to the next blog where I’ll share that info!
